Surrealism & Visionary Art: A Living Current is a public, one-day cultural and visionary gathering that brings together the surrealist legacy of Leonora Carrington with contemporary practices of visionary art, symbolic thinking, and expanded states of consciousness.
Presented in collaboration with Visionary Voices, the Leonora Carrington Museum, and internationally recognized visionary artists such as Amanda Sage and Carrie Ann Baade, alongside leading figures in the psychedelic research community, including Mario Oneiros. This gathering brings together visionary talent to build meaningful connections and spark inspiration within the depth of the Sierra Huasteca jungle.
The program unfolds as an immersive journey through talks, experiential activations, and shared moments of contemplation.
The event is open to the public and is offered free of charge to all participants of the Visionary Voices Retreat, including artists selected for the exhibition.

Amanda Sage
Amanda Sage is a pioneering visionary artist whose work integrates traditional painting and innovative technology in service of regenerative culture, offering pathways for both personal transformation and collective evolution. As co-founder and initiator of the Vision Train, she has catalyzed a global creative movement that began as a collaborative drawing project and evolved into an international virtual community dedicated to shared experimentation, skill-building, and mutual support.
She serves on the board of directors of the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors (CoSM), co-leads annual painting intensives with her partner Joe Bob Merritt, and has been a resident artist at Vienna’s WUK for over two decades. Her work is held in the permanent collection of the Kirkland Museum in Denver, has been featured at Meow Wolf Las Vegas, and in 2021 was the subject of her first solo museum exhibition at the Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum in Arizona.
Visionary Lineage: A Living Current from Mysticism to Contemporary Visionary Art
Visionary Lineage: A Living Current from Mysticism to Contemporary Visionary Art traces the enduring thread of visionary seeing that flows through mystical experience, surrealism, fantastic realism, and contemporary visionary culture. Drawing from historical movements and personal artistic practice, this talk explores how artists across time have accessed imaginal realms, altered states, and symbolic languages to make the invisible visible. Rather than treating visionary art as a style or genre, the lecture frames it as a living transmission, one that continues to evolve as artists serve as bridges between inner worlds and collective consciousness.
Carrie Ann Baade
Carrie Ann Baade is an internationally exhibiting painter and Professor of Painting and Drawing at Florida State University. Her oil paintings engage Renaissance and Baroque imagery through a contemporary lens, blending historical techniques with conceptual innovation to explore themes of transformation, mortality, sexuality, and the darker dimensions of human nature.
Her work has been exhibited at major international art fairs and museums across Europe, Asia, Australia, and the United States, including the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville. Baade has received numerous awards, been featured in publications such as Forbes, Juxtapoz, and Hi-Fructose, and exhibited alongside artists like H.R. Giger and Robert Williams. She holds an MFA from the University of Delaware, a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and is the author of Scissors and Tears (2022), a monograph documenting two decades of her allegorical practice.
Heretic Knowledge: Intuition, Imagination, and the Painted World
This talk considers intuition as a form of heretic knowledge, an embodied, imaginative intelligence long excluded from dominant systems of reason. Through painting, images emerge before language, generating meaning through material process, psychic attunement, and sustained looking rather than linear logic. In dialogue with Leonora Carrington’s legacy, the painted world is framed as a site of speculative inquiry, resistance, and radical ways of knowing.
Mario Oneiros
Mario Alonso Martínez Cordero, also known as Oneiros Speculum (The Oneiric Mirror), is a philosopher, author, and educator focused on dreamwork, consciousness studies, and psychedelic research. He holds a Master’s degree in Philosophy of Religions from UNAM and training in Transpersonal Psychology, and is the author of several books, including Onirocosmos and Psychedelic Revelations: A Psychonaut’s Guide to Expanding the Horizons of Consciousness.
With over a decade of experience in psychedelic education, he is the founder and director of the Entheogens and Sacred Plants specialization at Universidad de la Nueva Era, a faculty member at InnerTrek in Oregon, and a participant in Mexico’s first institutional research on psilocybin mushrooms. He is also co-founder of NIDO, a psychedelic care initiative at festivals, and Vía Synapsis, a collective organizing academic conferences on psychoactive substances at UNAM.
Activation: Dreams and Symbols of the Mystery
Dreams communicate through symbols and metaphor, the same imaginal language found in visions, creative trances, and psychedelic states. Visionary art arises from this inner terrain, where consciousness expresses itself through archetypal imagery rather than explanation.
Through a guided exercise exploring one participant’s dream symbolism, the group will reflect on their own inner worlds, revealing the link between dreaming, artistic creation, surrealism, and visionary art.
